From Then To You
The Beatles' Christmas Album, as it was known in the US, was produced in 1970 for the Beatles' fan clubs. In the United Kingdom, the album was called From Then to You.
Since 1963 the Beatles had provided a special Christmas message to their fan club members each year on flimsy plastic known as "flexi-discs." The content would include fragments of carols, jokes, skits and thank-you's to the fans. In spite of their cheap production and poor sound quality, serious collectors are keen to assemble a complete set of all seven. (The final one was made after the group had effectively disbanded, and featured individual appearances of the four former Beatles.)
When it came time for a "Christmas Message to Fans" in 1970, Apple decided to release a compilation album of the previous "flexi-discs," this time on true vinyl. US fan club members received their Christmas album early in 1971. The messages from 1964 and 1965 had not previously been sent to US fan club members. Subsequent attempts by third parties to produce a copy of the Christmas messages for the general public were thwarted by successful litigation by the Beatles and Apple Records.
