Rubber Soul was released by Capitol in the US on December 6, 1965, just three days after the album first appeared on the Parlophone label in the UK. It went platinum in the US (6x) and in Canada (2x) and was yet another number one charted album in both countries. It was Capitol's ninth Beatles LP. Until Sgt. Pepper, Capitol released US albums with track listings distinctly different from those on the UK versions.

Critics have noted that Capitol purposefully modified the sequence of songs to give the album more of a folk-rock feel and less of a segue into psychedelic rock, which would characterize Sgt. Pepper and Magical Mystery Tour. This maneuver was accomplished by adding in Paul's I've Just Seen a Face and It's Only Love. Both had appeared on the UK version of Help! Four tracks in the UK version were deleted, yielding only 11 songs for the album and less than a half hour of music. They were the more driving tunes: Drive My Car, Nowhere Man, If I Needed Someone, and What Goes On. (They would eventually come out in the US on Yesterday and Today.)
Minor differences between the songs as pressed in the UK and the US can be noted, mainly because the stereo mix sent to the US differed from the mixes used by Parlophone. There is a well-known false start in I'm Looking Through You, which is on every US record and not on any UK versions. The Word includes Lennon's voice double-tracked and an additional high harmony in the second half. Some of the percussion pans from left to right in the stereo version, which of course is not audible in the mono version. Finally, the percussion in Michelle in the US mono pressings is more prominent than the UK version.
