This compilation album Rarities was released by Capitol records in 1980 and features a number of tracks and song variations that were rate in the U.S.. This release should not be confused by the very different Parlophone version of Rarities released in the UK in 1978 which was essentially a compilation of singles that had not been released on a UK studio albums. The tracks on that album were already available in the U.S.

The controversial and rather unappealing "butcher" cover photo of the Yesterday...and Today was chosen for gatefold of the album cover for this version of Rarities, probably to drum up some publicity.

The tracks are in the main mono or stereo variations of previously released songs. One interesting inclusion is "Sgt. Pepper Inner Groove," which consists of a few seconds tones, noise, and laughter contained on the original runnout groove of the U.K. version of Sgt. Pepper, but not on the U.S. release. It has been restored and is now included with all modern releases of the album.

In addition to its U.S. target market, the Rarities album was released in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, France, and Japan.

The album is currently out of print, though all the songs are available on other albums and collections.
