This Paul McCartney tune was written while on tour early in 1964 and is said to be about Paul's girlfriend, Jane Asher. Paul was looking for a hit sequel to A Hard Day's Night, but this song was deemed best used as a filler for the album Beatles for Sale. The folk-rock feel, the fade-out ending and the use of a timpani overdub all point to the coming "middle period" of Beatles music. Every Little Thing is also notable because John sings it, though Paul wrote it.
