Good Morning Good Morning was written by John Lennon after returning from touring in early 1967. He took a retreat from the craziness for a while and just wrote. His inspiration was a TV commercial for a Kellogg's cereal. Lennon typically had the lyrics before writing the music. This helps to explain why some of his melodies change time signature often. Good Morning Good Morning is no exception. Paul later commented that John seemed bored at this time in his life and in conflict with his wife, Cynthia. He was even watching afternoon soap dramas, the height of passive, vicarious living. The lyrics reflect "nothing to do" and "meet the wife." Sound effects of animals are heard in this track, with each one being introduced having the capability of devouring the previous one. They start with a rooster and then proceed "up the food chain" to cats, dogs, horses, sheep, lions and elephants. Then a new sequence commences with a fox chased by hunters and dogs, a cow and a hen. Like other tracks on Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, the arrangement also features brass. Recording commenced on February 8, 1967 with 8 takes, and then added vocals and bass on February 16. The Anthology 2 disc has a copy of the song as it was at this stage. Brass and special effects were added in other overdubs on March 13 and new lead vocals and a McCartney guitar solo on March 28. The animals were added the next day. The album was released on June 1, 1967 in the UK (June 2, 1967 in the US).
