Something New

Written by Lennon with input from McCartney in February of 1964 for George Harrison to sing in the Beatles' upcoming movie, A Hard Day's Night, this song has, in Paul's phrase, "a slim little premise," designed to stir up the fan base. Musically, the chord changes (from E to a-flat minor) are quite sophisticated, and yield harmonies much more complicated than the simple lyrics really deserve. The song also shows a syncopated back-beat not heard before, but which becomes prominent in later releases. Harrison takes the lead and also plays his 12-string in this track.
