Arthur Alexander, a popular US singer of soul music, came out with Soldier of Love (Lay Down Your Arms) in 1962.

The Beatles greatly admired Alexander, and immediately covered the song. (Alexander's song, Anna (Go to Him) was included on the Beatles' debut album, and the Beatles aped Alexander's A Shot of Rhythm and Blues three times for the BBC.) The song was recorded on July 2, 1963 for a Pop! Go the Beatles radio program. It aired on July 16. The compilation, Live at the BBC (1994) contains this track.
