Footnotes:
  • Original release - these are the songs that were released during the course of the Beatles' recording career from their first single Love Me Do (October 5, 1962) to their last release, the album Let It Be (May 8, 1970). Many previously unreleased songs, jams, bootlegs, unfinished numbers, demos, song variations, remixes, and various other bits and bobs have trickled out since. So much so that the size of their catalog has nearly doubled since their breakup in 1970 if you where to take them all into account. The list of "original releases" is what The Beatles really were to the world in the 1960s. If you're not too familiar with The Beatles, start with these.
  • Original composition - a song written by The Beatles or by one of the band members.
  • Cover - a song performed by The Beatles but written by someone else.
  • Giveaway - a song written by The Beatles but (originally) performed by someone else. Since their breakup, many of The Beatles' demos and unfinished studio recordings of these "giveaway" songs have come out on documentary compilations like the Anthology series or as bootlegs. You can read the song notes to sort it out as it can be confusing, but we've listed them under "giveaways" for quick reference.
  • Studio recording - some Beatles songs where recorded essentially "live in the studio" so, at times, there is a fine line between live and studio recordings. If the songs were performed in a studio and later tinkered with to any significant degree by engineers, we checked this box.
  • Live - performed on stage in front of an audience or recorded live in a studio on the fly (like live at the BBC) - the flip side to the concept of studio recording above. While a particular song can't be both a studio recording and live, when you add song variations in, it can confusingly seem so. Read the song notes on the individual pages for clarification.
  • Improvisational - normally a moment "caught on tape" in the studio of the band composing on the fly, jamming, or goofing around with a song in the early stages of development.
  • Demo - an informal or very preliminary recording of a song in a studio-esque setting (like Paul's parent's bathroom or George Harrison's living room).
  • Third-party contribution - a song that came out on a Beatles album, but was not written or performed by one of the Beatles (mostly bits by George Martin or songs associated with Beatles movies soundtracks like the U.S. version of Help! or Yellow Submarine).
